Notes | John Martindale Hall was born in Cleator Moor, Cumberland, in 1897, the son of James Thomas Hall, a musical instrument seller, and his wife Elizabeth. In May 1913 he went to work for Bank of Whitehaven as an apprentice at its Cleator Moor branch. In 1916 that bank was acquired by Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co. By that date, however, Hall was already away on military service. He was commissioned into the Border Regiment in November 1915, having previously been a Cadet in its Officer Training Corps. Second Lieutenant John Martindale Hall died on 28 August 1916 of wounds received in action on the Somme. He was 19 years old. |
